- But that was then and this is now. HST, in 1996, has little "salient
- value" anymore. Similarly HST Cellular has little value. One of the
- long standing shortcomings of HST Cellular mode was that it *required*
- that you -lock- the host modem in HST Cellular mode, rendering it
- virtually useless for anything other than HST or HST Cellular calls.
- USR realized that as the various technological advances have come along
- that HST Cellular wasn't as popular as ECT and MNP10. If HST Cellular
- is an issue, then go back to the 07/05/95 code, lock your modem in HST
- cellular mode and kwitcherbellyachin.
-
- As for the "Dual Standard" moniker, this fell by the wayside along with
- HST Cellular. USR's flagship modem is today called the "V.Everything"
- and HST modulation is included at no additional charge. USR didn't
- downgrade the "Dual" rather they upgraded the V34 model and reduced
- the price. Remember what Hayes Optima 288s sold for when they first
- came out? How much are they now? Is hayes obligated to rebate the
- price difference to users who bought early? Hardly. How is your
- situation that different? I paid over $700 for my first Courier/Dual
- from a mailorder/discount outfit back in 1989. How much is *that* modem
- worth today? $50 maybe?
-
- USR took nothing away from you.... if you need HST Cellular, you're not
- going to be able to use *any* of the V34 toys because you're going to
- have to leave your modem locked in HST Cellular mode in order to make
- HST Cellular work, ergo you only need the 7/5/95 firmware.
